If Buddy Valastro thought it would be a piece of cake to put a neon sign on the roof of the Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem, he thought wrong.

Valastro, star of TLC’s “Cake Boss,” is opening Buddy V’s at the casino this spring. The Italian restaurant is the celebrity chef’s second; he also owns a Buddy V’s in The Venetian Hotel Resort Casino, another Sands property in Las Vegas.

A Sands Bethlehem representative went before the Bethlehem Planning Commission on Thursday to ask for permission to erect what planners described as a “freestanding, illuminated neon sign” on the casino’s roof. Rooftop signs aren’t allowed under the city’s zoning unless they were grandfathered prior to the law.
